The time has come for an overall transformation in the so far neglected healthcare industry and almost every player is gung ho about the sweeping changes taking place. Entrance of new players, alliances, entry of a never-before breed of third party administrators (TPAs), are some of the welcome changes and everybody who is somebody in the industry is waiting to exploit the vast potential the healthcare industry holds.
An Organised system of healthcare:
The entry of new players is expected to bring about a shift in the healthcare delivery system in the country. The conventional system would be hopefully done away with and patients will see an organised delivery system of healthcare facilities. There is so far no organised system of delivering primary healthcare in local areas and communities. Again, the relationship between the patients and local general practitioners is casual and unless the patient is a frequent visitor, the doctor too finds it difficult to recall the history of the patient's problems.
Choice of Healthcare Services:
Policyholders will now have a choice of healthcare services providers. Quality healthcare at affordable costs will be the new mantra. Primary healthcare, an area most often neglected will now see an overall change.
Health Maintenance Clinics:
Few Indian organisations are in the process of establishing a new operational system of linking the primary care with secondary and tertiary care, all under one management. This is indeed timely. Besides the healthcare providers will concentrate on setting up small clinics known as Health Maintanance Clinics that provide simple treatments and laboratory facilities in major 'catchment areas.' The idea of connecting these clinics to the same organisation's larger diagnostic centres and hospitals makes sense if there is need for further medical intervention in the form of testings or hospitalisations.
Information Technology:
Connecting various branches or clinics of a single healthcare provider will come about soon. Accessing medical records from any branch of the medical centre will work as a catalyst and speed up the usual time taken on consultations.
